PDP Govs Warn Wike Against Derailing Ibadan Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum has warned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and other dissenting voices against actions that could derail the party’s forthcoming national convention scheduled for November 15, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The warning was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s 7th meeting held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, in Gusau, Zamfara State.
The PDP governors reaffirmed their full support for the resolutions of the party’s 101st National Executive Committee meeting held in July, which endorsed the Ibadan convention.
“The Forum reaffirms its full commitment to the resolutions of the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of July 2025 regarding the November 15 National Convention.
“It urges members to resist all attempts to derail the convention by anti-party forces, but to see the PDP as the only democratic institution and viable alternative for restoring Nigeria along the path of good governance and national development,” the communiqué read in part.
The meeting, chaired by the Forum’s Chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, deliberated on insecurity, the erosion of democratic values, and preparations for the Ibadan convention.
The governors commended PDP leaders and members for their resilience in overcoming “orchestrated defections,” insisting that such distractions could not diminish the party’s grassroots appeal or the people’s desire for affordable living and security as experienced under past PDP governments.
They accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of divisive governance and policies that continue to impose hardship on Nigerians.
Wike Threatens Fresh Crisis
Wike, in an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, had expressed dissatisfaction with the PDP’s South-South Caretaker Committee and the retention of Ali Odefa as National Vice Chairman (South East).
He warned of a looming crisis if the party failed to recognise the zonal congress in Calabar that produced his ally, Chief Dan Orbih, as National Vice Chairman, South-South.
“There is no two ways about it. The National Vice Chairman of PDP South-South is Chief Dan Orbih. If they don’t agree, that’s another round of crisis,” Wike declared.
The former Rivers State governor also rejected the zoning committee led by Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri.
Wike, who once belonged to the influential G5, has since parted ways with Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, his former ally.
Party members continue to accuse him of anti-party activities for serving in President Bola Tinubu’s APC-led cabinet, an allegation he has repeatedly denied.
