The leadership of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), loyal to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has described its recent recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a timely intervention that would restore stability, order and constitutional governance within the party.
Recall that The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally recognised and invited the group led by Abdulrahman Momammed to a meeting between the commission and registered political parties.
The recognition followed an order by a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, which recently nullified the national convention held in Ibadan by the Governor Seyi Makinde group between15 and 16 November, 2025.
The judge, Uche Agomoh, held that the Caretaker Committee led by Mohammed Abdulrahman and Samuel Anyanwu remained the only recognised National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, pending the conduct of a valid national convention.
The Wike group in a statement on Thursday signed by its Acting National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Mohammed argued that the timing of INEC’s action is criticall, as the PDP begins early preparations for its National Convention and the broader strategic process of repositioning the party to present credible candidates in the next general elections.
“By affirming a lawful leadership structure in line with the judgement of the Federal High Court, INEC has removed uncertainties capable of undermining the party’s organisational processes and electoral readiness,” the statement read.
The NCWC also commended the electoral umpire for what it described as its commitment to due process and the rule of law, noting that such actions strengthen democratic institutions and reassure party members that legality, rather than arbitrariness, remains the guiding principle in political administration.
The committee urged PDP members across the country to rally behind the recognised leadership, set aside internal differences and focus on reconciliation and party rebuilding.
“The time has come to embrace unity and channel our collective energy towards strengthening the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections,” the statement said, adding that Nigerians are looking to the party for responsible leadership and a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP further called on stakeholders at all levels of the party to support Abdulrahman Mohammed’s leadership as it works towards organising a successful national convention, restoring internal cohesion and laying the groundwork for the emergence of competent candidates.
