Rep Member Unyime Idem Defects From PDP To APC, Cites Internal Crisis

The lawmaker representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State, Unyime Idem, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and dated June 25, 2025, the lawmaker cited internal wranglings within the PDP, particularly over the office of the national secretary, as the reason behind his decision.

“It is with a great sense of responsibility and love for my people that I make this formal statement,” Idem wrote.

The Rep member said the decision followed “extensive consultation with my family and constituents,” noting that the situation within the PDP had become untenable.

“The escalating internal crisis in the PDP, especially regarding the office of the National Secretary, where some party officials currently lay claim to, and other irreconcilable differences, have caused me to review my membership of the party,” he explained.

Idem, who has spent nearly three decades in the PDP, highlighted his dedication to democratic service throughout the years.

He said his commitment to delivering dividends of democracy to his constituents and the state remained his top priority.

“Having been a loyal and committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for about 26 years, and have through the party’s platform, served the people of Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State, and Nigeria diligently.

“My conviction to continuously attract dividends of democracy to my Federal Constituency and state is paramount, and stands far above other considerations,” he stated.

The lawmaker referenced Section 68(1g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to back his decision, saying the crisis within the PDP justified his resignation.

“Consequently, I hereby announce my defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the letter concluded.

Idem currently serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement.
